Unearth – Jenni Higginbotham
Throwback Online Exhibition- 2014
The highly rendered drawings and paintings feature ambiguous or otherwise disorderly spaces. The spaces depicted have been altered—transformed into “spaces of becoming.” These spaces defy the logical order of designed spaces— they are caves, the underbellies of bridges, and derelict, abandoned places. These spaces have become playgrounds, despite the fact that they were never intended to be such. These images are narrative explorations of time and place, the ambiguity and lack of translatability of the works perpetuating the narrative’s potential. The objects of play in these drawings are either unrecognizable to the viewer or their designated use is undeterminable. These works create private imaginative moments to be interpreted by the viewer’s estranged eye. In a larger sense, these images depict the essential human desire to transform and imbue existence with meaning, all the while acknowledging the difficulty of sharing a particular experience with others.
