Unstill Life – Valerie Broatch
May- June 2014
…there exists no color in the natural world, and no sound – nothing of this kind; no textures, no patterns, no beauty, no scent.” Sir John Eccles, Neurologist
The ‘Unstill Life’ Series is about perception, how our encounters with nature are filtered through our thoughts, beliefs, memories and emotions.
What we perceive as reality is ‘mind-made’. Beauty is not a quality of the natural world, but an awakening of a deeper insight into who we are, from a place beyond the mind. Perception of beauty is self-knowledge. I import my photographs into an Ipad app called Artrage. I draw quickly with spontaneous gestures, much like automatic drawing or expressionist painting, allowing mistakes and welcoming surprises
